Alto Horn by Graves & Co., circa 1860
This alto horn made by Graves & Company in about 1860 is another example of their unique design. It is part of the Steve Ward collection. Like all known Grave instruments from that time, it is all nickel silver and of very high quality design and construction.
As in several other examples covered elsewhere on this website, it can be played with the bell either over the shoulder or upright. It was missing a number of original parts, including the entire mouthpipe and receiver assemblies, but were reproduced accurately based on other existing instruments.
